ISA-88, published internationally as IEC 61512, is the standard for batch process control. It separates equipment from recipes and defines physical, procedural and recipe models. BatchML is its XML implementation.
ISA-88
ISA-88 (often just S88) is the standard for batch manufacturing, the way food, beverage, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical plants make product in lots. It is published by ISA and internationally as IEC 61512.
- Recipes separate from equipment - What to make and how is kept apart from the equipment that makes it, so one recipe can run on different lines.
- Physical model - Enterprise, site, area, process cell, unit, equipment module and control module.
- Procedural model - Procedures break down into unit procedures, operations and phases.
- Recipe types - General, site, master and control recipes, moving from what a product is to how one batch is run.
BatchML, the XML implementation of the ISA-88 models, ships alongside ISA-95’s B2MML from MESA International. PackML builds on the same state-machine thinking for packaging lines.
