PackML is the OMAC standard for how automated machines report and are commanded through a common state model, modes and a set of tags, published as ISA-TR88.00.02.
PackML
PackML gives every machine on a line the same behavior from the outside. It was developed by OMAC for packaging and published with ISA as technical report ISA-TR88.00.02, and it is now used well beyond packaging.
- One state model - Every machine moves through the same states, such as Stopped, Idle, Starting, Execute, Held, Suspended, Complete and Aborted, driven by the same commands.
- Unit modes - Production, maintenance and manual modes, each defining which states are allowed.
- PackTags - A standard set of named tags for commands, status and administration data, such as counts, speeds and stop reasons.
- Line integration - Because every machine reports the same way, line controllers and MES do not need custom code for each vendor.
For APIs, PackML is a ready-made resource model for a machine: a state, a mode and a known set of fields. It is a natural contract for an OPC UA, MQTT or REST interface on a line, and it builds on ISA-88.
