ISA-95

ISA-95, published internationally as IEC 62264, defines the models and terminology for integrating business systems with manufacturing operations. B2MML, maintained by MESA International, is its XML Schema implementation.

ISA-95 is the standard for the boundary between the business and the plant: how an ERP system and a manufacturing execution system (MES) describe the same orders, materials and equipment. It is published by ISA and internationally as IEC 62264.

  • The functional hierarchy - Levels 0 to 4 run from the physical process and its sensors, through control and manufacturing operations, up to business planning and logistics. “Level 3” and “Level 4” in a plant conversation come from here.
  • Object models - Shared models for personnel, equipment, physical assets, material, process segments, production schedules and production performance.
  • Operations management - Activity models for production, maintenance, quality and inventory operations.
  • B2MML - MESA International maintains B2MML, a set of XML Schemas that implement the ISA-95 models. Release V7.00.00 is on GitHub.

For APIs, ISA-95 is the shared vocabulary an integration between ERP, MES and the plant should be designed against. It is also the reference most unified namespace and industrial data platform designs use to organize their topics and resources.
