Zigbee is a low-power wireless mesh standard for connected devices, governed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, built on IEEE 802.15.4 with its own application and cluster layer. It carries a large installed base of lighting, sensing and building-automation devices predating Matter.

Zigbee is the low-power mesh standard that carried connected lighting, sensing and building automation for two decades before Matter arrived. It is governed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the same body that now stewards Matter.
- Clusters - Zigbee defines an application layer of clusters — on/off, level control, colour, occupancy — that describes what a device can do.
- Not IP-native - Traffic reaches the wider network through a coordinator or hub, which is the architectural difference Thread removed.
- Profile fragmentation - Multiple profiles and vendor extensions meant certified devices still frequently failed to interoperate, which is the problem Matter exists to solve.
- Large installed base - Enough deployed devices that bridging rather than replacement is the practical path.
Zigbee earns its place in this catalog as the cautionary half of the connected-device story. It was an open standard with a real governance body and broad adoption, and it still produced an interoperability problem large enough to require a second standard on top. The State of Compute & Hardware APIs found it at three silicon vendors in a devices layer averaging 11.9 — and the lesson generalizes past hardware: a standard that specifies the wire and leaves the semantics negotiable does not deliver interoperability. That is the same finding the report reaches about Redfish from the positive direction.
