TM Forum Open API

The TM Forum Open API suite is a family of standard REST APIs covering the operational and business support side of a telecom operator — product catalog, ordering, service qualification, billing, trouble ticketing and the rest. Where CAMARA standardises what the network can do for an application, TM Forum standardises how a communications provider runs itself and interconnects with partners.

TM Forum Open APIs are the older, deeper and more widely deployed telecom API standard, and they occupy a different layer from the network APIs that get the attention.

  • Numbered specifications - Each API carries a TMF number (TMF620 Product Catalog, TMF622 Product Ordering, TMF641 Service Ordering, TMF931 Open Gateway onboarding) that vendors and operators cite directly.
  • Open Digital Architecture - The suite is the API layer of TM Forum’s ODA, the reference architecture much of the industry’s BSS and OSS estate is built against.
  • A real certification programme - Vendors and operators certify conformance per API, and TM Forum runs a joint programme with the GSMA covering Open Gateway onboarding.
  • Adopted where CAMARA is not - Carriers frequently hold TM Forum conformance while publishing no network API of their own; MTN Group ships twenty-two TM Forum APIs and references CAMARA nowhere.

The certification is the part worth scrutinising. The joint GSMA/TM Forum programme reports 237 certified API assets, and when The State of Telecom APIs went looking for that register, the conformance directory returned 403 to an anonymous request. A certification that a machine cannot read is a certification that cannot participate in the agentic discovery it would most benefit from.
