Teams use it to align stakeholders, track progress, and adapt to changing requirements throughout the project lifecycle.

SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework, is a body of practices for applying agile, lean, and DevOps methods across a large enterprise rather than a single team. Where Scrum or Kanban organizes one team, SAFe adds the structure — Agile Release Trains, Program Increments, portfolio-level planning — meant to coordinate dozens or hundreds of teams working toward shared objectives. First published in 2011, it has become one of the most widely adopted (and widely debated) scaling frameworks in large organizations.

In the API world SAFe is the organizational scaffolding around how large enterprises actually plan and ship their API programs — API roadmaps, platform teams, and governance functions frequently sit inside a SAFe structure. That is a double-edged reality: the framework gives big organizations a shared cadence for delivering APIs at scale, but its ceremony can also slow the iterative, feedback-driven work good API design depends on. When I assess enterprise API maturity, understanding whether a team’s delivery model helps or fights their API lifecycle is often as telling as the technical artifacts themselves.
