Peppol is an open, governed network for exchanging electronic procurement and invoicing documents across borders — a four-corner model where each party connects once to an accredited access point, plus the Business Interoperability Specifications that constrain UBL documents into a profile everyone can process.
Peppol
Peppol is the closest thing business-document exchange has to a properly governed network. It began as an EU project for cross-border public procurement and is now run by OpenPeppol, a member-driven non-profit, with national authorities operating local governance.
- Four-corner model - Sender and receiver each connect to an accredited access point; the access points interoperate. Connect once, reach everyone, which is exactly what EDI’s point-to-point model never delivered.
- BIS profiles over UBL - Business Interoperability Specifications narrow the underlying document schemas so that a received invoice is actually processable rather than merely well-formed.
- A discovery layer - SMP and SML let a sender resolve which access point serves a given recipient and what document types they accept — genuine machine-readable discovery, which is rare in this space.
- Accreditation - Access points are certified, which is what makes the network trustworthy without bilateral agreements.
Peppol deserves close attention in API research because it solved the problem EDI did not: it has a registry and a discovery mechanism. A sender can look up a recipient’s capabilities programmatically. That is the piece The State of Supply Chain APIs found missing almost everywhere else in the market, and it is not a coincidence that Tradeshift — a Peppol-native platform — scores 62.3 and is one of only four Agent-Native records in a cohort of 1,138.
