OpenUSD

OpenUSD (Universal Scene Description) is the scene-composition framework originating at Pixar and now governed by the Alliance for OpenUSD, defining how large 3D scenes are described, layered, referenced and collaboratively edited. It has become the interchange backbone for film, simulation and increasingly games and industrial digital twins.

OpenUSD, Universal Scene Description, is the scene-composition framework that originated at Pixar and is now governed by the Alliance for OpenUSD. It defines how large 3D scenes are described, layered, referenced and collaboratively edited — the emphasis on composition being what separates it from an interchange format.

  • Layering and composition - Multiple contributors edit non-destructive layers over a shared scene, which is the capability film pipelines were built around.
  • References and payloads - Scenes assembled from reusable assets, loaded lazily, which is how it survives scenes no single machine could hold at once.
  • Alliance governance - Moved from a single studio’s project to a multi-vendor alliance under the Joint Development Foundation.
  • Beyond film - Simulation, industrial digital twins and increasingly games.

OpenUSD and glTF are frequently posed as rivals and are not. glTF is a delivery format for a finished asset; OpenUSD is how the scene gets built and maintained upstream of that. A pipeline usually wants both, and the interesting engineering question is the boundary between them rather than which one wins.
