NeoNephos is a project of Linux Foundation Europe, launched in Brussels on 31 March 2025, dedicated to advancing open source projects that align with the strategic objectives of the EU’s IPCEI-CIS (Important Project of Common European Interest — Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services). It hosts fourteen projects spanning Kubernetes platforms, infrastructure, micro frontends, key management and two specifications — Open Resource Discovery and the Open Component Model — and is funded through the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme.
NeoNephos
NeoNephos is Linux Foundation Europe’s home for the open source pieces of a European cloud stack. It launched on 31 March 2025 with Clyso, Cyberus Technology, Deutsche Telekom, SAP, TNO – ECOFED, STACKIT and 23 Technologies as initial members, and its site now lists 22 members, among them SUSE, T-Systems, BWI and Fraunhofer ISST. Most of its projects were contributed with SAP copyright notices in their repositories.
It is an umbrella, not a standard. Only two of its projects are specifications in the strict sense — Open Resource Discovery and the Open Component Model. The rest are software whose standards contribution is the Kubernetes resource model they define:
- Specifications - Open Resource Discovery · Open Component Model
- Kubernetes platforms - Gardener · IronCore · CobaltCore · Platform Mesh · OpenControlPlane · Greenhouse · Chantico
- Telco federation - Katalis
- Micro frontends - Luigi · Open Micro Frontend Platform
- Security and operating system - OpenKCM · Garden Linux
