ISO 20022

ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial messaging that provides a common data dictionary and XML/JSON message definitions. It underpins modern payments, securities, and cash-management messaging worldwide.

ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial messaging that provides a shared data dictionary and a consistent set of message definitions, expressed in XML and increasingly JSON. Rather than defining a single message, it defines a common modeling methodology and business vocabulary so that payments, securities, trade, cards, and cash-management systems can exchange richly structured, unambiguous data.

  • Common data dictionary - A single, reusable set of business components and elements that every message type draws from for consistency.
  • Structured message definitions - Machine-readable XML/JSON schemas for concrete flows like credit transfers, direct debits, and reporting.
  • Rich, granular data - Far more structured remittance and party information than legacy formats, improving reconciliation and reducing manual repair.
  • Global governance - Maintained through a registration authority and industry submission process that keeps the catalogue current and interoperable.

For financial APIs, ISO 20022 is the payload standard behind the modern rails — SWIFT’s cross-border migration, real-time payment systems, and open-banking schemes increasingly model their messages on it. As banks expose these flows through APIs and, now, through agent-facing interfaces, ISO 20022 provides the structured, well-governed vocabulary that lets payment instructions and reporting move between institutions without lossy translation.
