ISO 14064 is the international standard for quantifying, monitoring, reporting and verifying greenhouse gas emissions and removals, split across organisation-level inventories, project-level reductions, and validation and verification. It is the assurance-facing counterpart to the GHG Protocol’s accounting rules, and it is what an auditor works against when a carbon figure has to be independently verified.
ISO 14064

- Part 3 — verification - What an auditor does, which is the part that gives a carbon figure standing outside the company that produced it.
- Purchased, not published - Like most ISO output, the document is sold rather than freely downloadable.
The distinction between ISO 14064 and the GHG Protocol is accounting versus assurance: the Protocol says how to count, 14064 says how someone else confirms you counted correctly. Neither produces a machine-readable artifact. For a carbon-data API, 14064 is the reason a verification status field exists at all, and it is the vocabulary that field has to mean something against.
