GSMA Open Gateway is the mobile industry’s commitment layer over the CAMARA specifications — the framework through which operators pledge to expose a common set of network APIs, in a common shape, across their markets. CAMARA defines the contract; Open Gateway is the industry agreeing to implement it and the commercial and interoperability apparatus around that agreement.
GSMA Open Gateway
Announced at MWC 2023, Open Gateway is the GSMA’s answer to the enterprise complaint that made the whole programme necessary: a multinational wanting the same network capability in every market had to negotiate it separately with every operator in every country.
- A commitment, not an implementation - Signing Open Gateway means agreeing to expose CAMARA APIs; it does not by itself produce an endpoint anyone can call.
- Federation - The design assumes an application reaches many operators through a channel rather than integrating with each one directly.
- Certification - The GSMA runs a certification programme; China Mobile’s Quality on Demand implementation passed sixty-three technical tests to earn one.
- Three audiences at once - The programme deliberately speaks to developers (OpenAPI and docs on GitHub), business leadership (commercial principles and monetization), and regulators simultaneously.
Membership and implementation are very different things, and the distinction is the single most useful lens to apply here. The State of Telecom APIs found twenty-six of thirty-six operators showing Open Gateway membership, twelve with a commercial launch reachable only through an aggregator, six that were press-release-only, and one — KPN, which is not a shareholder in the industry’s own aggregator — publishing a CAMARA contract with a real host, a free sandbox and published euro pricing.
