GS1 is the global not-for-profit standards organization behind the barcode, the GTIN, the GLN and the SSCC — the identifier system used to uniquely name products, locations and logistics units across supply chains worldwide. It also governs EPCIS for event-based traceability and the GDSN for product master-data synchronization.
GS1
GS1 is the standards body that gave the world the barcode. Its identifier system — the GTIN for products, the GLN for locations and parties, the SSCC for logistics units — is the closest thing the physical economy has to a universal primary key, and it sits underneath effectively every consumer good manufactured and traded today.
- Identification keys - GTIN, GLN, SSCC and their siblings give products, places and shipments globally unique, resolvable names.
- Data carriers - The linear barcode, the GS1 DataMatrix and QR codes carrying GS1 Digital Link, which resolves an identifier to web content.
- EPCIS - The event standard for capturing what happened to an object, where, when and why, used for pharmaceutical and food traceability.
- GDSN - The Global Data Synchronisation Network, through which certified data pools syndicate product master data between suppliers and retailers.
- Federated governance - Standards are set globally and administered by member organizations in over a hundred countries.
The interesting tension for API operations is that GS1’s work is overwhelmingly published as specifications to be implemented rather than as endpoints to be called. The State of Supply Chain APIs scored GS1 at 25.6, in the Emerging band, with agent-readiness of 19.4 — a reading that says nothing about the quality of the standards work and everything about its distribution model. An agent holding a GTIN and asking what product it names has no neutral, authoritative endpoint to ask; it has a commercial data pool, a retailer’s catalog, or a scrape. GS1 Digital Link is the piece of the stack that points at a different future, resolving an identifier straight to web resources, and it is the part worth watching.
