EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) is the GS1 standard for capturing and sharing supply chain event data — what happened to an object, where, when, and why. It is the interoperability layer behind pharmaceutical serialization and food traceability programs.

EPCIS is GS1’s standard for supply chain visibility events. Where the GTIN names a thing, EPCIS describes what happened to it — the four dimensions it models are what, where, when and why, captured as a stream of events as an object moves through commissioning, packing, shipping, receiving and dispensing.
- Event-shaped, not record-shaped - The unit of exchange is an event about an object, which fits a physical process far better than a request/response resource does.
- EPCIS 2.0 is web-native - The 2022 revision added a JSON/JSON-LD serialization and a REST binding alongside the original XML, which is what makes it API-relevant at all.
- The compliance workhorse - US pharmaceutical serialization under DSCSA converged on EPCIS as the interchange format between trading partners.
- Paired with CBV - The Core Business Vocabulary supplies the controlled terms that make one company’s events legible to another.
EPCIS is the clearest example in the supply chain of a standard that got pulled forward by a regulation. Nothing about it was inevitable; a near-mandate for interoperable, unit-level electronic traceability gave the pharmaceutical industry a reason to converge, and it converged here. The State of Supply Chain APIs found the traceability vendors built for that obligation scoring above the segments around them, which is the shape of what happens when an obligation names an exchange rather than a report.
