Cybersecurity Standards

Cybersecurity Standards are the frameworks, control catalogs, and guidelines that codify how organizations protect information systems, networks, and data from threats. Rather than a single specification, the term covers a family of well-known bodies of work - the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO/IEC 27001, the CIS Controls, SOC 2, and sector-specific regimes like PCI DSS and HIPAA - each offering a structured, auditable way to reason about risk. They give teams and their auditors a shared vocabulary for what “secure enough” means.

• NIST Cybersecurity Framework - Organizes security work around the functions of Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover.
• ISO/IEC 27001 - An internationally certifiable standard for building and running an information security management system (ISMS).
• CIS Controls - A prioritized, prescriptive set of defensive actions mapped to real-world attack patterns.
• Sector regimes - PCI DSS, HIPAA, SOC 2, and similar frameworks translate general principles into requirements for specific industries and data types.

For API providers these standards are the backdrop against which security posture gets judged - the difference between claiming to be secure and being able to prove it to a customer’s procurement or audit team. They shape concrete API practices like authentication, encryption, access control, logging, and vulnerability disclosure, and increasingly they inform machine-checkable governance where the presence of controls and artifacts like security.txt becomes a scored signal of operational maturity.
