ArchiMate

An open and independent enterprise architecture modeling language to support the description, analysis and visualization of architecture within and across business domains in an unambiguous way.

ArchiMate is an open, independent enterprise architecture modeling language, maintained by The Open Group, for describing, analyzing, and visualizing architecture within and across business domains in an unambiguous way. It gives architects a common visual notation and vocabulary to connect the business, application, and technology layers of an organization in a single coherent model. As a standard rather than a tool, it is supported across many modeling products.

  • Layered framework - Separates business, application, and technology layers so each concern is modeled distinctly yet linked.
  • Standard notation - A defined set of elements and relationships gives every diagram a consistent, unambiguous meaning.
  • Cross-domain traceability - Lets you trace how a business process depends on an application, which in turn depends on infrastructure.
  • Open Group standard - Vendor-independent and widely supported, often used alongside the TOGAF architecture framework.

In API operations, ArchiMate shows up when APIs need to be placed in the larger enterprise picture — mapping which application and technology components an API exposes, and which business capabilities depend on it. That traceability matters for governance and change management: when an architecture model makes the dependencies between business processes and API-backed services explicit, teams can reason about the blast radius of a change before they ship it.
